Commencing Monday, July 18, 2011, the new regulations will take effect for couples in Ontario wishing to get divorced.
Every couple wishing to get a divorce through the provincial court system will be required to attend an information session about alternatives to going to court. The couple will also be provided with the option to attend a mediation session paid for by the attorney general’s office.
The province-wide program will cost $8 million a year.
Attorney General Chris Bentley says the program will save couples time, money on lawyers and much of the emotional toll that comes with the court system. A lot of couples are not aware of alternatives that are available to them that are less costly than litigation. An individual will often spend between $4,000 and $5,000 in lawyer’s fees just to get to the first hearing. The new program will inform couples of the alternatives to the court system. This is a great program since it is designed specifically towards saving time and legal fees for couples applying to get divorced.
